Public-Court-Records.us is independent. This website is not the Superior Court of California, County of Kern, the Judicial Branch of California, Kern County, the Kern County Sheriff, a federal court, PACER, a law firm, a government agency, or a Consumer Reporting Agency. This page provides general court-record access information only.

Responsible-use warning: a matching name does not prove identity. A lawsuit, arrest, charge, citation, petition, warrant entry, docket event, or portal record does not prove guilt or liability. Kern County court records are searchable online, but court files are not simply downloadable

The official trial-court custodian is the Superior Court of California, County of Kern. Kern’s Case Information Search page routes users to the registered portal, and the portal states that it allows users to search case data from the court’s case management system.

The most important limitation is this: Kern’s own court-records page says access to case files is not available via the Internet. Users may be able to review case data, register of actions, docket-style information, or calendar details, but document copies and official certified records must be requested through the court, in person, by mail, or through the appropriate document-request route.

50 Searches per hour

The general public portal limit is 50 case-data searches per hour.

$0.50 Copy page

Kern lists 50 cents per page for court copies.

$15 Generic search / dissolution cert

The court lists a $15 generic search initial fee and $15 certified dissolution judgment copies.

2025 Case-number cutoff

For non-criminal case numbers filed before September 25, 2025, the portal says to exclude hyphens.

Kern-specific portal note: the court’s eCourt FAQ says users open Case Information, scroll to “Accept and Enter” under Registered Users, then log in or create an account to view case information. Non-criminal documents can be requested through the court website; criminal documents are requested through the division where the case is filed.
Scam warning: Kern Superior Court displays a scam alert warning about fraudulent texts claiming to be from the Court and fake payment links. Do not pay through text-message links. Use only official court payment or records pages.

Routing table

Choose the correct Kern County court-record system before searching

Kern has separate routes for case data, document copies, civil/small-claims records, family records, probate records, criminal documents, traffic payments, recorder documents, jail custody information, state appeals, and federal records. Use this table before creating an account or sending payment.

Kern County California court-record routing guide
Need Correct official route What to do first
Case data, register of actions, docket summary, case lookup Kern Case Information Search / Kern Superior Court Portal Open the Case Information Search page, accept the disclaimer, then register or log in. General public searches are limited to 50 cases per hour.
Civil lawsuit, small claims, limited/unlimited civil, unlawful detainer Civil and Small Claims division / Request Case Documents Use the portal to locate case data, then request non-criminal documents through the court’s Request Case Documents route.
Divorce, custody, support, domestic relations or family law file Family Law division / Request Case Documents Search carefully, then request the exact document. Some family records may not be remotely available under California access rules.
Probate, estate, will, guardianship, conservatorship, trust or involuntary commitment Probate division / Probate document request Use Smart Search or the portal to locate the case number when possible. For a copy of a will, Kern states that a court order for production of the will or a certified death certificate of the decedent must be included.
Criminal case record or criminal document Kern portal for case information; criminal division for documents Use the portal for public case data, then request criminal documents from the division where they are filed. Do not treat a charge, warrant entry or arrest reference as a conviction.
Traffic citation or traffic payment Kern Pay Traffic Citations / Traffic division Use the official traffic route. Do not use the online payment service if pleading not guilty or if the matter is a fix-it citation where proof of correction may reduce the amount due.
Juvenile record Juvenile Justice Center / authorized access only Do not assume public online access. Juvenile records are restricted and may require authorized status, identification, court review, or a court order.
Transcript of a hearing Kern Transcript Request Use the online transcript request route and provide hearing date, department, case number and parties. A transcript is different from a docket or certified order.
Deed, recorded map, mortgage, lien, recorded document, APN-based document search Kern County Assessor-Recorder / Recorder Official Records Use the Recorder system, not court case search. APN searches are not available online after the December 9, 2024 law-change notice and must be done at in-person kiosks.
Current jail custody or booking information Kern County Sheriff Inmate Search Use the Sheriff for custody status. A jail record is not the same as the court docket, final disposition or certified court record.
State appeal from a Kern case California Appellate Courts Case Information / Fifth District Court of Appeal Search appellate records separately and compare the trial-court case number with the appellate case number.
Federal district or bankruptcy case PACER / Eastern District of California / Eastern District Bankruptcy Court Use PACER Case Locator if the federal court is unknown. Kern County Superior Court does not maintain federal district or bankruptcy dockets.
Copies and fees

Kern County court-record copy fees, search fees and certified-copy cautions

Kern’s court-record and judicial-record request pages list several common fees and mail-request requirements. Always verify the current amount with the court before mailing a blank check, requesting a large file, or assuming a downloaded docket summary is an official certified record.

Common Kern Superior Court record-copy fee references
Request Common court-listed fee or instruction Practical next step
Court copy pages 50 cents per page. Identify the exact document before ordering so you do not pay for unnecessary pages.
Generic case search Initial $15.00 generic search fee. Use the portal or courthouse self-search first if possible, then request clerk research only when needed.
Certified copy of Judgment of Dissolution $15.00 for certified copies of Judgment of Dissolution. Ask the requesting agency whether it needs a certified divorce judgment or a plain copy.
Certified copies of Orders $40.00 plus 50 cents per page. Confirm whether each order must be certified and whether a plain copy is enough.
Mailed court-copy request Include names of plaintiff/petitioner and defendant/respondent, stamped self-addressed envelope, and check payable to Kern County Superior Court. Add case number, case type, document title, filing year and a not-to-exceed note when the exact copy cost is unknown.
Processing time for mailed requests Depending on workload, mailed copy requests may take at least 10 working days to process. Use the portal, courthouse counter or document-request page first when time-sensitive.
Recorder document copy Kern Recorder lists $3.00 for the first 8.5 × 11 page per document, 50 cents for each additional page, and 50 cents for certification under seal. Use this only for recorded documents, not court case files or criminal dispositions.
PACER federal record PACER pricing verified September 7, 2026: $0.10 per page, $3.00 cap for many case-specific documents and reports, and $30 quarterly waiver threshold. A temporary increase to $0.12 per page and a $40 threshold is announced for January 1, 2027. Use PACER only for federal appellate, district and bankruptcy records. Use case numbers and narrow filters to control billable pages.

Access limits

California remote-access limits, sealed files and courthouse access

California electronic court-record rules allow public electronic access to many calendars, indexes, registers of actions and civil records, but they restrict public remote access to sensitive case categories. A record may be visible at the courthouse or available to a party, attorney or authorized person even when it is not publicly available over the internet.

Records with common remote-access limits
  • Family Code proceedings, including divorce, legal separation, support, custody and domestic violence prevention.
  • Juvenile court proceedings.
  • Guardianship and conservatorship proceedings.
  • Mental-health proceedings.
  • Criminal proceedings, except limited extraordinary-case situations.
  • Minor-compromise, civil harassment, workplace violence, elder abuse and gun-violence prevention records.
What this means in Kern County
  • Online case data may not show full documents.
  • Case files are not available directly via the Internet.
  • Some documents require a court request, in-person review or mail request.
  • Sealed and confidential records are not public.
  • Party or attorney access may differ from public access.
  • Certified copies must come from the court, not a screenshot.
Do not bypass restrictions: if a record is sealed, confidential, juvenile, restricted, or unavailable online, use the official court, party-access, attorney, or court-order route. Do not search for leaked copies or republish protected information.

Do not mix systems

Court records vs recorder records, sheriff custody records, criminal history and federal cases

Kern County record searches often fail because the record is held by a different custodian. Court case records, recorder documents, sheriff inmate information, police reports, state criminal-history records, appellate records and federal records are separate systems.

Use Kern Superior Court for
  • Civil, small claims and unlawful detainer cases.
  • Criminal court cases and court calendars.
  • Family law and divorce case files.
  • Probate, guardianship and conservatorship files.
  • Traffic citations and court payments.
  • Court-file copies and certified court records.
Use Kern County Recorder for
  • Recorded real-property documents.
  • Deeds, mortgages and recorded maps.
  • Recorded liens and releases.
  • Recorder-certified copies.
  • Grantor/grantee and document-number searches.
  • APN searches at in-person kiosks only.
Use separate systems for
  • Current inmate or custody searches.
  • Police or sheriff incident reports.
  • California DOJ criminal-history records.
  • California appellate dockets.
  • Federal district court records.
  • Federal bankruptcy records.
Practical rule: court records show court activity. Recorder records show recorded instruments. Sheriff records show custody or booking information. PACER shows federal cases. A single person or business may appear in more than one system, but the systems are not interchangeable.
Appeals and federal records

Where Kern County appeals, federal district cases and bankruptcy records go

A Kern County trial-court case can later appear in a different system if it is appealed, or it may be federal from the beginning. Do not expect the Kern Superior Court portal to contain the complete appellate or federal record.

California state appeals

Use California Appellate Courts Case Information and the Fifth District Court of Appeal. The Fifth District includes Kern County and is located in Fresno. Compare the trial court case number, party names, case caption and appellate case number.

Federal district court

Use PACER and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California. PACER’s court lookup lists Kern County in the Eastern District and identifies a Bakersfield federal court location at 510 19th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301.

Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy is federal, not a county civil case. Use the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of California and PACER. The bankruptcy court has Eastern District locations and federal case access through PACER.

PACER pricing verified September 7, 2026: PACER currently lists $0.10 per page, a $3.00 cap for many case-specific documents and reports, and a $30 quarterly waiver threshold. PACER has announced a temporary increase to $0.12 per page and a $40 quarterly threshold beginning January 1, 2027.
Troubleshooting

What to do if a Kern County court-record search returns no result

Check search mistakes first
  • No portal account or login issue.
  • Wrong case type, division or courthouse.
  • Wrong spelling, middle name, suffix, maiden name, business name or abbreviation.
  • Case number copied with wrong punctuation.
  • Non-criminal case number filed before September 25, 2025 searched with hyphens.
  • Searching recorder, sheriff, appellate or federal records as if they were trial-court files.
Then check access limits
  • Case-file documents are not available directly via the Internet.
  • Sealed, confidential, juvenile or restricted record.
  • Remote-access limits under California Rule of Court 2.503.
  • Criminal documents must be requested through the filing division.
  • Non-criminal documents require the Request Case Documents route.
  • The record may require courthouse viewing or mail request.
Best next step: contact the proper Kern Superior Court division or submit the correct document request with the case number, case type, court location, filing year, party names, exact document title, and whether you need a plain copy, certified copy, transcript, or administrative record.
Docket help

How to read Kern County docket information without over-interpreting it

A register of actions or docket is a summary timeline of filings and court events. It is not always a plain-English explanation of the final result, and it is not the same as the full case file or a certified court record.

Party roles

Plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, appellant, appellee, creditor, debtor, decedent, personal representative, guardian and ward are legal roles. A role does not always mean wrongdoing.

Docket events

Complaint, petition, summons, motion, notice, order, minute order, hearing, judgment, dismissal, plea, sentence, warrant and continuance entries should be read in context.

Disposition caution

Open, pending, disposed, dismissed, closed, reopened, stayed, vacated, satisfied, sentenced or appealed can mean different things depending on case type. Verify final disposition before relying on it.

Legal and privacy safety

Use Kern County court records carefully

Identity-matching rules
  • Do not identify a person from a common name alone.
  • Compare case number, court division, filing date, party role and docket activity.
  • Do not assume an arrest, charge, warrant entry or citation is a conviction.
  • Do not assume a civil judgment shows current payment status.
  • Use official certified court records when the result matters.
Responsible publishing rules
  • Do not harass, threaten, shame or retaliate against anyone.
  • Do not republish children’s names, protected health details, addresses or unnecessary sensitive information.
  • Do not bypass sealed, juvenile, confidential or restricted-record rules.
  • Do not scrape court records into a people-search or background-check product.
  • Contact the official court for corrections, sealing, expungement and certified copies.

Are Kern County case files available online?

No. The Kern Superior Court court-records page states that access to case files is not available via the internet.
