Public-Court-Records.us is independent. This page is not the North Carolina Judicial Branch, Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court, eCourts Portal, Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds, a law firm, a government agency, PACER, or a Consumer Reporting Agency. It provides general public-record navigation only.

Responsible-use warning: a name match does not prove identity. An arrest, charge, complaint, indictment, citation, lawsuit, or petition does not prove guilt or liability. Do not use this page for employment, housing, credit, tenant, insurance, licensing, or other FCRA-regulated screening decisions.

Quick navigation

Start with the section that matches your record type. Mecklenburg court records are not the same as deeds, jail records, police reports, or federal bankruptcy records.

Start here

Mecklenburg County court records start with the NC Judicial Branch and Clerk of Superior Court

The Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court is the local custodian for many court files at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse in Charlotte. Online access is primarily through the NC eCourts Portal, while courthouse public access and older file requests still matter for records that are not visible online.

The NC Judicial Branch says the Mecklenburg Clerk of Superior Court Office is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and that public records can be accessed onsite during operational hours. It also states that starting October 9, 2023, electronic access to public case information, court dates, and copies of court documents is routed through Portal.

26 District identifiers

Mecklenburg is listed as Prosecutorial District 26, Superior Court District 26, and District Court District 26.

Oct. 9 2023 Portal cutoff

Older files not found in Portal may require the Clerk division request route.

9–5 Clerk public hours

The courthouse page lists Monday–Friday public hours for the Clerk office.

$25 Certified county check

NC lists this fee for a certified single-county criminal record search through the Clerk.

High-value local rule: if a Mecklenburg criminal, civil, or estates special proceedings document was filed before October 9, 2023 and cannot be found in Portal, the official county page directs users to request electronic copies from the appropriate Clerk division and include the record type, party names, and file number if known.

Use NC eCourts Portal and the Mecklenburg Clerk criminal route.

For criminal case records, search Portal by case number or name when available. For a certified single-county criminal record search, use the Clerk of Superior Court and Form AOC-CR-314 rather than relying on Portal as a background check.

Court routing

Choose the right Mecklenburg County court or record custodian

North Carolina has Superior Court and District Court trial divisions. Mecklenburg users should identify the division before searching because felony, misdemeanor, family, juvenile, civil, estate, deed, and federal records follow different routes.

Mecklenburg County court-record routing table
Need Correct source Best first step
Felony criminal case Superior Court / Clerk of Superior Court Search Portal by case number or defendant name, then verify division, filing date, docket entries, and disposition.
Misdemeanor, infraction, or many traffic matters District Court / Portal / Clerk Use Portal for case or citation information. Court costs, payments, and waiver options depend on the specific citation and court status.
Civil lawsuit over $25,000 Superior Court Search Portal and confirm the case division, party roles, complaint, judgment, dismissal, satisfaction, or appeal activity.
Civil lawsuit $25,000 or less District Court Use Portal or courthouse terminals. Do not assume a civil judgment means current payment status without checking later entries.
Small claims or eviction Small Claims Court / Magistrate / District Court Small claims are heard by magistrates and may include money claims, summary ejectment, personal property recovery, and certain liens.
Divorce, custody, child support, or family case District Court / Family Court / Clerk Use Portal for public case information, then contact the Clerk or Family Court office for access, scheduling, and certified divorce judgment questions.
Estate, probate, guardianship, incompetency, foreclosure, or special proceeding Clerk of Superior Court / Estates or Special Proceedings Search Portal where available. Sensitive guardianship or incompetency records may have confidentiality limits.
Juvenile case District Court / Juvenile route Do not assume public online access. Juvenile matters can be restricted; contact the official court for lawful access instructions.
Deed, mortgage, real estate record, marriage license, birth, death, or marriage certificate Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds Use the Register of Deeds, not Portal. Divorce judgments remain court records handled by the Clerk where the divorce was granted.
Federal district or bankruptcy case PACER / Western District of North Carolina Use PACER Case Locator if you do not know the federal court. Mecklenburg is in the Western District of North Carolina, Charlotte Division.
Portal workflow

How to search Mecklenburg County records in NC eCourts Portal

Portal is the official online starting point for North Carolina eCourts case information, court dates, document access where available, and payments. Use the court’s terminology and do not enter sensitive information on third-party look-alike pages.

Open the NC eCourts Portal.

Confirm the address is the official Tyler-hosted North Carolina Portal linked from nccourts.gov.

Select Mecklenburg County when filtering.

If the portal offers a county filter, choose Mecklenburg so you do not mix results from other North Carolina counties.

Use the safest search field first.

A case number or citation number is more precise than a broad name search. If searching by name, use spelling variations carefully.

Compare the full result.

Check division, case type, party role, attorney, filing date, docket activity, judgment, dismissal, and disposition before relying on a record.

Look for available documents or copy options.

Portal may show public case information and documents where available, but not every paper file, older document, sealed file, or restricted record is online.

Contact the Clerk for certified or missing records.

For official copies, older files, or documents filed before October 9, 2023 that are not found in Portal, use the Mecklenburg Clerk instructions.

Background-check warning: North Carolina states that individuals performing background checks should use the county clerk’s office, not Portal. Portal is useful for case information, but it is not a substitute for a certified single-county criminal record search.
Copies and fees

Certified copies, courthouse viewing, and Mecklenburg record-search fees

North Carolina court records can be viewed through Portal where available, at public self-service terminals, or by reviewing paper files at the Clerk office in the county where the case is located. Copies may require a fee, and certified copies must come from the official custodian.

Access limits

What may be missing, restricted, or unavailable online

Do not assume every Mecklenburg County court record is online. Portal access, courthouse terminal access, and paper file access depend on case type, age, confidentiality rules, document availability, court orders, and the official custodian.

Common reasons a case does not appear
  • Wrong county or wrong court division.
  • Name spelling, middle name, suffix, maiden name, or business-name mismatch.
  • Document filed before October 9, 2023 and not found in Portal.
  • Older paper file or courthouse-only access.
  • Federal, appellate, deed, marriage, vital, police, or jail record searched in the wrong system.
Records that may have restrictions
  • Juvenile matters.
  • Involuntary hospitalization or certain mental-health proceedings.
  • Sealed or expunged criminal records.
  • Protected family, custody, domestic violence, adoption, or guardianship information.
  • Documents with confidential identifiers or court-ordered sealing.
Best next step after a failed search: contact the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court with the record type, party names, file number if known, approximate filing year, and the exact document needed. Ask whether the file is in Portal, on paper, restricted, sealed, in another division, or held by another agency.

Avoid wrong systems

Court records vs jail, police, deed, marriage, and vital records

Many users search “Mecklenburg County court records” when they actually need a different agency. Use this section to avoid the most common wrong-office mistakes.

Which Mecklenburg public record system should you use?

Current custody, booking, jail housing, inmate status Mecklenburg County Sheriff or jail route Jail records and court records are separate systems.

Appeals and federal

Mecklenburg appeals, federal district cases, and bankruptcy records

Trial-court records, state appellate records, and federal records are separate. A Mecklenburg case may begin in Superior or District Court, but an appeal or federal case will not always be fully reflected in the local trial-court record.

North Carolina Court of Appeals

The Court of Appeals is the state’s intermediate appellate court. It reviews trial-court proceedings for legal or procedural error, not to re-try facts.

North Carolina Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is the state’s highest court. Use its dockets, orders, opinions, and document resources for cases pending there.

Federal and bankruptcy records

Mecklenburg County is in the Western District of North Carolina, Charlotte Division. Bankruptcy matters use the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of North Carolina.

PACER pricing verified September 9, 2026: PACER and federal court pages currently reference $0.10 per page and a $30 quarterly waiver threshold, while federal bankruptcy court notices identify a public-access fee increase effective January 1, 2027. Always review current PACER pricing before opening billable reports or documents.
Docket help

How to read Mecklenburg court-record fields safely

A docket is a case activity log, not a full legal explanation. Use neutral language and verify the final disposition before relying on a record.

Party roles

Plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, appellant, appellee, decedent, personal representative, guardian, ward, debtor, and creditor are roles. A role does not always mean wrongdoing.

Common entries

Complaint, petition, summons, motion, notice, order, judgment, dismissal, plea, sentence, continuance, and appeal entries may appear. Read nearby entries before drawing conclusions.

Status caution

Open, pending, closed, disposed, dismissed, reopened, stayed, satisfied, or appealed can mean different things by case type. Ask the Clerk or an attorney for official interpretation.

Legal and privacy safety

Use Mecklenburg County court records carefully

Identity-matching rules

  • Compare case number, court division, filing date, party role, attorney, and lawful identifiers.
  • Do not assume a charge or complaint is a conviction or finding of liability.
  • Do not assume a judgment remains unpaid, unappealed, or unsatisfied without checking later records.
Responsible publishing rules
  • Do not harass, threaten, shame, or retaliate against anyone.
  • Do not republish children’s names, addresses, medical details, or unnecessary sensitive information.
  • Respect sealed, expunged, juvenile, confidential, and restricted records.
  • Contact the official custodian for corrections, access restrictions, certified copies, and expunction questions.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Mecklenburg County court records

What is the official way to search Mecklenburg County court records?

Start with the NC eCourts Portal for online case information, court dates, documents, and payments where available. For onsite public access, older files, paper files, or certified copies, contact or visit the Mecklenburg County Clerk of Superior Court at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse.

Can I search Mecklenburg County court records by name?

Yes. North Carolina’s Portal and courthouse public terminals can support name-based searching for case information. A name match is not identity proof, so compare the case number, court division, filing date, party role, attorney, docket entries, and disposition before relying on a result.

What changed for Mecklenburg County court records on October 9, 2023?

The NC Judicial Branch states that starting October 9, 2023, electronic access to public case information, court dates, and copies of court documents is routed through Portal. If a criminal, civil, or estates special proceedings document filed before October 9, 2023 cannot be found in Portal, use the official Mecklenburg Clerk division request instructions.

Where is the Mecklenburg County Courthouse?

The Mecklenburg County Courthouse is at 832 East Fourth Street, Charlotte, NC 28202. The main courthouse phone number is 704-686-0400, and the Clerk of Superior Court Office is open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except holidays.

How do I get a certified criminal record search in Mecklenburg County?

For a certified single-county criminal record search, use the Clerk of Superior Court office and Form AOC-CR-314. The NC Judicial Branch lists a $25 fee for that certified single-county search and explains that it checks only that one county, not the entire state.

Are Portal searches the same as official background checks?

No. The NC Judicial Branch says individuals performing background checks should use the county clerk’s office, not Portal. Public-Court-Records.us is not a Consumer Reporting Agency and this page must not be used for employment, housing, credit, insurance, or tenant-screening decisions.

Which court handles felony, misdemeanor, family, small claims, and civil records in Mecklenburg County?

Superior Court handles felony cases and civil cases over $25,000. District Court handles misdemeanors, infractions, family and juvenile cases, and civil cases involving $25,000 or less. Small claims are part of District Court and are heard by magistrates for qualifying claims.

Where do I search Mecklenburg County deeds, marriage records, or vital records?

Use the Mecklenburg County Register of Deeds, not the court-record search, for deeds, real estate records, business-related recorded documents, marriage licenses, marriage certificates, birth certificates, and death certificates. Divorce judgments are court records and come from the Clerk of Superior Court in the county where the divorce was granted.

Where do I search appeals from Mecklenburg County cases?

Use the North Carolina appellate court resources, including the NC Appellate Courts Document Library, Court of Appeals, and Supreme Court pages. Trial court records and appellate records are separate, so compare the appellate case number with the Mecklenburg lower-court case number.

Where do I search federal cases from Mecklenburg County?

Federal cases use PACER and the federal court system, not the Mecklenburg County Clerk’s Portal route. Mecklenburg County is in the Western District of North Carolina, Charlotte Division. Bankruptcy records use the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of North Carolina and PACER.
