Search Union County court records through the correct Ohio court system

Union County has more than one public court-record route. Common Pleas records are searched through the Union County Clerk of Courts, Marysville Municipal Court has a separate CaseLook database, and Probate records follow different online and archive rules depending on when the case was filed.

This guide explains which portal to use, how far each online system goes back, when document images are available, where sensitive records must be viewed, how to search older files, and where Union County appeals and federal cases go.

The main Union County Clerk of Courts search does not cover every local court record

Common Pleas index

Generally begins January 1, 1990.

Generally begin January 1, 2002.

Municipal cases

Use Marysville Municipal Court’s separate record search.

Probate records

Access method changes at June 1, 2019.

An online result is not always the complete or current court file.

The Union County Clerk warns that its electronic public-record service can be affected by update cycles, maintenance and sensitive-information restrictions. Marysville Municipal Court separately warns that its online system can lag filings and judicial actions by at least 24 hours and sometimes longer.

Wrong-person protection

Verify several details before linking a Union County case to someone

A name match alone is not enough. Two unrelated people can share a name, and one person can appear in several different cases.

No matching details selected. Do not associate the record with a person.
Separate municipal database

Use Marysville Municipal Court CaseLook for municipal cases

Marysville Municipal Court maintains its own online record search at 1250 West Fifth Street in Marysville. Do not assume that a case missing from the Common Pleas index does not exist.

Search option

Use the Municipal Court’s separate Record Search / CaseLook system.

Possible delay

The court warns that posting can lag filings and judicial action by at least 24 hours or longer.

Verified information

Send a request to the court or visit during business hours when official verification matters.

Practical municipal name-search tip

The court’s online payment search requires a last name. Its instructions say that when a case is difficult to locate, trying only the last name can reveal all matches with that surname.

Traffic records can change after the search.

Marysville Municipal Court states that its court records are updated on a daily cycle. A missed court date, warrant, license forfeiture or payment eligibility issue can therefore require direct verification with the Clerk.

Access rules can depend on the type of juvenile case and the information requested.

Do not attempt to bypass confidentiality or sealing restrictions. Contact the Juvenile Clerk directly when you have a legitimate reason to request information.

Official copies

Find the case online first, then request the exact court document you need

Save the full case number Record the case number exactly as displayed by the official court system.
Identify the exact document Ask for a specific judgment entry, order, complaint, decree or other filing rather than requesting an entire file without reason.
Determine the correct records office Common Pleas documents go through the Clerk of Courts; Probate documents go through Probate; Municipal records go through Marysville Municipal Court.
Ask whether certification is actually required A plain copy may be enough for research, while government or legal use can require a certified copy.
Confirm the current copy cost before paying The Clerk’s public-record policy currently lists ordinary public-record reproduction at ten cents per page plus applicable mailing costs, but certification and court-document fees can differ.
Use the Clerk’s official records-request email The county instructs users needing certified copies to contact the Legal Division.

Troubleshooting

Why a known Union County court case may not appear in your first search

Common search problems and the next step
Problem Possible reason What to do
Common Pleas search returns nothing The case may predate January 1, 1990. Check the Clerk or Records Center & Archives.
Misdemeanor or traffic case is missing It may belong to Marysville Municipal Court. Use the separate Municipal Court CaseLook search.
Municipal case was filed very recently The online system can lag court activity by at least 24 hours or longer. Check later or contact the Municipal Court directly.
Case appears but no image is available The document may predate January 1, 2002 or may not be remotely viewable. Contact the Clerk for the file.
Document is marked sensitive Remote access is restricted. Ask whether it can be inspected in the Clerk’s office.
Old Probate case is missing online Pre-June 2019 Probate records use another access route. Contact Probate or use the Archives / public terminal route.
Probate record is confidential Adoption, minor settlement, mental-health or sealed matters can be excluded. Do not attempt to bypass the restriction.
Case is an appeal The case has moved to the Third District or Ohio Supreme Court. Use the appropriate appellate docket.
Case is federal County systems do not contain federal dockets. Search PACER.
A blank result is not proof that a person has never had a court case.

Record age, court type, spelling, restricted access, filing timing and the difference between Common Pleas and Municipal Court can all affect the result.

Responsible record use

A court filing or criminal charge does not establish the final result

Criminal cases

A felony charge, municipal citation, complaint or warrant-related entry does not prove guilt. Read the latest entries and final disposition.

Civil and domestic cases

Being named as a plaintiff, defendant, petitioner or respondent does not show who prevailed. Review judgments, dismissals, decrees and later orders.

Always prefer the current official record.

Court cases can be amended, dismissed, appealed, satisfied, sealed, expunged or otherwise changed after an earlier search.
