Ector County court records are split by court level and record custodian

Ector County links to an official public portal for local court records, but the correct custodian still matters. The District Clerk handles many district court records, including felony, district civil, family, tax, and related district filings. The County Clerk handles county-level court services, County Court and County Courts at Law routing, probate, certain civil matters, official public records, and vital-record services.

Justice of the Peace courts and Odessa Municipal Court can be separate. A JP traffic case, an eviction, a small claim, or a City of Odessa citation may not be solved by contacting the District Clerk. Federal district and bankruptcy cases are outside the county system and must be searched through PACER and the correct federal court.

5 District courts

Ector County lists the 70th, 161st, 244th, 358th, and 446th District Courts.

2 County Courts at Law

County Court at Law and County Court at Law No. 2 are located at the Ector County Courthouse.

4 JP precincts

Justice of the Peace Precincts 1, 2, 3, and 4 all list court routes and contact information.

11th Court of Appeals

Ector pages state the Eleventh Court of Appeals has served Ector County since September 1, 2003.

Local routing clue: Ector County’s civil department explains that the District Clerk maintains records for the portion of County Court at Law and County Court at Law No. 2 civil jurisdiction where the amount in controversy exceeds $500 but does not exceed $100,000. Do not assume every County Court at Law record is automatically a County Clerk record.

Avoid wrong searches

Court records are not the same as jail, sheriff, police, land, or vital records

Use a court or clerk for
  • Case docket and cause number.
  • Civil petition, order, judgment, or dismissal.
  • Felony filing, plea, sentence, or disposition.
  • County misdemeanor docket or order.
  • Certified copies of court orders, judgments, and dispositions.
Use another office or system for
  • Current jail custody or booking status.
  • Police incident reports.
  • Birth, death, and marriage vital records.
  • Land records, deeds, mortgages, liens, and recorded instruments.
  • Federal district and bankruptcy dockets.
Arrest is not disposition: jail and sheriff information can show a booking or custody event, but a court docket shows filings, hearings, pleas, orders, judgments, dismissals, and final case outcomes. Do not treat an arrest or citation as a conviction.
Appeals and federal cases

Where Ector County appeals, federal cases, and bankruptcy records go

Trial-court records, appellate records, and federal court records live in separate systems. Use the trial-court cause number to connect them, but do not assume the county portal contains the complete appeal or federal docket.

Texas appeals

Ector County pages state that the Eleventh Court of Appeals has served Ector County since September 1, 2003, while the Eighth Court of Appeals served Ector County before September 1, 2003.

Federal district court

Ector County is listed in the Western District of Texas Midland-Odessa Division. Use PACER or the federal district court route for federal civil and criminal dockets.

Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy is federal. Ector County is listed in the Western District of Texas Bankruptcy Court Midland Division, and PACER is used for bankruptcy docket and document access.

State appellate and federal routes for Ector County matters
Record type Official route Important caution
Appeal filed September 1, 2003 or later Eleventh Court of Appeals / Texas appellate case search Compare the trial court cause number with the appellate case number.
Older Ector County appeal before September 1, 2003 Eighth Court of Appeals route where applicable Older appellate routing can require careful verification with the appellate clerk or archive.
Federal civil or criminal case Western District of Texas, Midland-Odessa Division / PACER Federal records are not county court records and are not certified by the Ector County Clerk.
Bankruptcy case U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Texas, Midland Division / PACER The Midland bankruptcy office is listed as unstaffed for hearing and 341 meeting location only; case processing is handled through the Austin Division as instructed by the bankruptcy court.
Troubleshooting

What to do if an Ector County court-record search returns no result

Check search mistakes
  • Wrong custodian: District Clerk vs County Clerk vs JP vs municipal court.
  • Wrong case type: felony, misdemeanor, probate, family, JP, municipal, or federal.
  • Name spelling, middle name, suffix, maiden name, business punctuation, or entity-name mismatch.
  • Searching an Odessa municipal citation in a county portal.
  • Searching a federal or bankruptcy case in a county system.
Check access limits
  • Sealed or expunged criminal record.
  • Juvenile or confidential matter.
  • Family, adoption, guardianship, mental-health, or protective-order privacy restriction.
  • Document images may require enhanced access or clerk request.
  • Older record may require archive, index, or staff assistance.
Best next step: contact the responsible clerk or court with the court name, case number if known, party names, approximate filing year, document title, and whether you need a plain copy, certified copy, register/docket entry, disposition, or payment balance.
Docket help

How to read Ector County docket fields without over-interpreting them

A docket is a timeline of case activity. It may not show every document image, and a docket entry may not explain the full legal outcome. Use neutral language and verify the final disposition with the correct clerk.

Party roles

Plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, appellant, appellee, debtor, creditor, decedent, guardian, ward, and personal representative are legal roles. A person’s appearance in a case does not always mean wrongdoing.

Common docket events

Complaint, petition, citation, summons, motion, notice, order, setting, hearing, judgment, plea, sentence, dismissal, bond forfeiture, and satisfaction can appear in dockets. Read later entries before drawing conclusions.

Disposition caution

Pending, disposed, dismissed, closed, reopened, stayed, or judgment entered can mean different things depending on the court and case type. Ask the clerk if the status matters for official use.

Legal and privacy safety

Use Ector County court records carefully

Identity-matching rules
  • Do not identify a person from a common name alone.
  • Compare court, case number, filing date, party role, docket activity, and lawful identifiers.
  • Do not assume an arrest, charge, complaint, or citation is a conviction.
  • Do not assume a civil judgment shows current payment status without checking later entries or satisfactions.
Responsible publishing rules
  • Do not harass, threaten, shame, or retaliate against anyone.
  • Do not publish children’s names, addresses, protected health details, or unnecessary sensitive information.
  • Do not bypass sealed, expunged, juvenile, family, protective-order, or confidential restrictions.
  • Contact the official custodian for corrections, sealing, expungement, and certified-copy needs.
