Important search-intent clarification

This page covers the Genesee County, Michigan 7th Judicial Circuit Court. It does not cover the federal U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which handles federal appeals from Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Michigan federal appeals go to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. This distinction matters because federal appellate cases use PACER rather than Genesee County or MiCOURT records systems.

Read first

Public-Court-Records.us is independent. This website is not the Genesee County 7th Judicial Circuit Court, Michigan Judiciary, Genesee County, MiCOURT, Michigan State Police, PACER, a law firm, government agency or Consumer Reporting Agency.

A name match does not prove identity. An arrest, charge, complaint, petition, lawsuit, indictment or docket entry does not prove guilt or liability. Do not use this guide as an FCRA-regulated employment, housing, tenant, credit or insurance screening report.

Court router

7th Circuit Court, 67th District Court or Probate Court?

A Genesee County search can fail even when a real case exists because Michigan trial courts have different jurisdiction. Select the record type first.

Use the 7th Judicial Circuit Court after felony bindover.

A felony generally begins in District Court for preliminary proceedings. After a qualifying bindover to Circuit Court, use the Circuit Court record as the primary public case route.

Michigan-specific felony rule

A felony can disappear from District Court after bindover

Michigan has an important record-routing rule for felony cases. When a District or Municipal Court binds a criminal matter over to Circuit Court, the lower-court records for qualifying post-July 2, 2024 bindovers become nonpublic after entry of the bindover order.

The Circuit Court record becomes the public court-record route. In Genesee County, that means a person who previously located the case in the 67th District Court may later need to search the 7th Circuit Court.

Practical troubleshooting: if a felony case appears to have vanished from a District Court search, check the 7th Circuit Court before assuming the case was dismissed, erased or expunged.
Actual case file

MiCOURT case history is not the same as the complete court file

A register of actions is a chronological case history. The actual case file can include complaints, motions, judgments, sentencing documents, orders, exhibits and other filings.

Michigan generally does not provide unrestricted public internet access to every trial-court document image. When a public case is visible but the document itself is not online, contact the court that maintains the record.

  • Complete case number if available.
  • Correct party names.
  • Approximate filing year.
  • Case type.
  • Exact document requested.
  • Whether you need certification.
Court records are not Michigan FOIA requests. Genesee’s current court-record administrative order explains that judicial court records are not subject to Michigan Freedom of Information Act requests. Use the court’s inspection and reproduction process instead.
Copies & fees

7th Circuit Court copy, certification and recording costs

Copy type matters. A paper court document, certified document, courtroom recording and reporter transcript follow different rules and can have different fees.

Current Genesee / Michigan court-record fee references
Record Published rule What to do
Certified Circuit Court record Michigan statutory baseline: $10 plus $1 per page when no different special provision applies. Ask Legal Records to confirm the current fee for the exact document.
Public inspection Public records can be inspected subject to court rules and access restrictions. Contact Legal Records when the information is not available through MiCOURT.
Digital copy of court proceeding $20 per day or partial day of eligible court proceedings. Use the court’s Request for Copy of Recording procedure.
Digital recording preparation Court asks users to allow up to 3 business days. Do not treat this as a transcript; it is a digital recording.
Transcript Court reporter / recorder transcript fees follow Michigan law and a separate ordering process. Call the Court Recorder Transcript Line at 810-424-4454.

Digital courtroom recordings have special restrictions

Parties and attorneys of record can purchase eligible digital proceeding copies subject to the court’s limited-use agreement. The court currently charges $20 per day.

A nonparty or attorney who is not counsel of record generally must file a written motion under Michigan Court Rule 2.119. The trial judge has discretion over whether access is allowed.

Recording ≠ transcript: a digital courtroom recording is not the same as a certified written transcript. Confirm which format the receiving court, agency or institution requires before paying.
Juvenile records

Genesee County juvenile records use a restricted route

The 7th Circuit Juvenile Records Department handles filings and records involving juvenile delinquency, child-protective proceedings and adoption matters.

The court states that juvenile court records are generally nonpublic and may only be released to the limited extent allowed by Michigan statute or court rule.

Docket interpretation

How to read a 7th Circuit register of actions without over-interpreting it

The register of actions is a procedural timeline, not a background-check summary. Read later events before deciding how a case ended.

Common party roles

Plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, appellant, appellee and other labels describe a person’s procedural position. Being named in a case does not itself prove misconduct.

Common events

Complaint, petition, summons, motion, order, hearing, adjournment, judgment, dismissal, plea, sentence and appeal entries should be read in sequence.

Criminal outcome

Distinguish arrest, charge, bindover, plea, conviction, acquittal, dismissal and sentence. One event should not be treated as the final outcome.

Court records vs other records

Do not confuse 7th Circuit records with jail, police or criminal-history records

Federal appeal

Federal appeals arising from Michigan go to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, not the federal Seventh Circuit.
