Fairfax County Court Records Search: eCaseSearch, Virginia Case Info, Copies, Appeals & PACER
Use this guide to find the correct official route for Fairfax County court records, including Circuit Court civil and criminal cases, General District Court civil, traffic and misdemeanor cases, Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court matters, land records, historic files, appeals, federal cases and bankruptcy records.
Public-Court-Records.us is independent. This website is not Fairfax Circuit Court, Fairfax County General District Court, Fairfax Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court, Virginia’s Judicial System, Fairfax County government, a law firm, a courthouse, PACER, or a Consumer Reporting Agency. This guide is general information only and is not legal advice.
Responsible-use warning: a name match does not prove identity. A complaint, petition, warrant, arrest, charge, traffic ticket, lawsuit, judgment, docket entry or hearing date does not prove guilt or liability. Do not use this article for employment, tenant, credit, insurance, licensing or other FCRA-regulated screening decisions.
Fairfax County court records depend on which court handled the case
Fairfax County has more than one court-record route. Fairfax Circuit Court is the trial court of general jurisdiction and handles felony cases, major civil cases, divorce, certain appeals, probate and land-record functions. Fairfax County General District Court handles traffic violations, misdemeanors, preliminary felony hearings, landlord-tenant matters, small claims and many civil cases. Fairfax Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court handles juvenile, custody, support, protective order and domestic-relations matters.
For federal lawsuits or bankruptcy cases involving Fairfax parties, do not use Fairfax County court search. Use PACER and the Eastern District of Virginia federal or bankruptcy court route.
Fairfax eCaseSearch lists available Circuit Court case information from Oct. 18, 2004.
eCaseSearch states searches are limited to the first 100 results.
Virginia small claims actions cover money or personal property claims up to $5,000.
Fairfax CPAN is described as a subscriber database of Circuit Court records from 1742 to present.

Select the record type. This privacy-safe helper runs in your browser and does not ask for names, case numbers, dates of birth or addresses.
For public non-confidential Circuit Court case information, search eCaseSearch by case number or name. Documents are not provided there, so use the file review, copy, civil records or certification route when you need an actual document.
Choose the correct Fairfax court before searching
Do not assume one portal covers every Fairfax case. Search by case type, court level and custodian.
| Need | Correct official route | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit civil lawsuit, divorce or higher-value civil case | Fairfax Circuit Court eCaseSearch and Civil Records/File Room | Search by case number or name in eCaseSearch, then request file review or copies from the Civil Records/File Room when documents are needed. |
| Felony case or Circuit criminal matter | Fairfax Circuit Court eCaseSearch and Criminal Division | Use case number when available. Remember that a charge or hearing entry is not a conviction or final disposition. |
| General District civil case | Virginia General District Court Online Case Information | Select Fairfax County General District Court and search by plaintiff or defendant name, case number or hearing date. |
| Small claims case | Fairfax General District Court Small Claims | Small claims are for claims up to $5,000. Search GDC case information, then contact the Civil Division for copies or filing-status questions. |
| Eviction / unlawful detainer | Fairfax General District Court Civil Division | Use the GDC search route and verify later docket entries for judgment, dismissal, redemption, satisfaction or appeal. |
| Traffic ticket, misdemeanor or preliminary felony hearing | Fairfax General District Court or town/city court listed on the ticket | Use GDC online case information. If the ticket is from the Town of Herndon, Town of Vienna or City of Fairfax, read the court location and contact details carefully. |
| Juvenile, custody, visitation, support, paternity or protective order | Fairfax Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court | Contact JDR Clerk’s Office or Court Services Unit. Do not expect ordinary public online access for juvenile or sensitive family matters. |
| Land records, judgments, marriage licenses, probate/fiduciary documents or wills | Fairfax Circuit Court Land Records / CPAN | Use CPAN if subscribed or the Land Records Research Room. Clerks can assist but generally do not perform title or land-record research for you. |
| Older case file or historic record | Circuit Court Offsite Records Center or Historic Records Center | Use the file review request route or contact the Historic Records Center with names, case number, approximate year and requested document. |
| State appeal | Court of Appeals of Virginia or Supreme Court of Virginia case information | Search by name or appellate case number and compare the Fairfax lower-court case number. |
| Federal civil, criminal or bankruptcy case | PACER, Eastern District of Virginia or Eastern District Bankruptcy Court | Use PACER Case Locator if you do not know the federal court. Fairfax local court systems do not contain federal dockets. |
How Fairfax Circuit Court eCaseSearch works
Fairfax Circuit Court eCaseSearch is a free public electronic service for non-confidential Circuit Court case information. It can be used for civil and criminal Circuit Court case searches, but it does not provide case documents.
- Public civil and criminal Circuit Court case information.
- Search by name or case number.
- Civil case type CL and criminal case types FE and MI.
- Hearing dates, charge lists and docket-style information when available.
- Information from October 18, 2004 forward, according to the eCaseSearch page.
- Certified copies.

Use civil for CL-type civil records and criminal for FE or MI case types listed by the system.
Case-number searching is safer than name-only searching and reduces false matches.
eCaseSearch says name searches must include at least the first two letters of the last name or business name. If results are too broad, narrow the search.
Compare case number, court, filing date, hearing information, docket activity and party role before relying on the result.
If you need a pleading, order, judgment, file review or certified copy, use the Circuit Court file review, copies, CPAN, Civil Records/File Room, Criminal Division or Historic Records Center route.

Why a known Fairfax case may not appear online
Online court data can be incomplete, delayed, limited by case type or unavailable because of confidentiality rules. The Virginia Judiciary warns users to verify accuracy, timeliness and completeness with the court that maintains the record.
- Wrong court: Circuit Court vs General District Court vs JDR.
- Wrong location: Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Herndon or Vienna.
- Name spelling, business suffix, maiden name or abbreviation mismatch.
- Case number missing leading zeros or exact formatting.
- Search too broad and limited to the first 100 results.
- Record older than the online coverage date.
- Confidential Circuit Court records do not appear in eCaseSearch.
- Adoption files are sealed and inactive adoption files require a court order for access.
- JDR, juvenile, protective order and family matters can have privacy limits.
- GDC online search excludes protective orders and civil commitment-type proceedings.
- Federal and bankruptcy matters belong in PACER, not Fairfax local portals.

Court records vs land records, police, jail, vital records and assessments
Fairfax court-record searches often fail because users search a court portal for a record held by another office. Use this distinction before searching or paying for copies.
| Need | Correct custodian | Do not confuse it with |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit civil, divorce or felony case docket | Fairfax Circuit Court | General District Court or CPAN land-record images. |
| Traffic, misdemeanor, small claims or landlord-tenant case | Fairfax General District Court | Circuit Court eCaseSearch. |
| Juvenile, custody, support, paternity or family-service matter | Fairfax JDR Court | Ordinary public criminal or civil searches. |

| Current custody or booking | Sheriff or jail system | Court disposition or final judgment. |
| Real estate assessed value or tax information | Fairfax County Department of Tax Administration | Land Records deed images or court judgments. |
| Federal civil, criminal or bankruptcy case | Federal court / PACER | Fairfax County court systems. |
Where Fairfax appeals, federal cases and bankruptcy records go
Some cases connected to Fairfax County are not searched through Fairfax County court portals. Trial-court, appellate, federal district and bankruptcy systems are separate.
Use Virginia Case Status and Information for Court of Appeals of Virginia and Supreme Court of Virginia case information. Search by name or case number, then compare the Fairfax lower-court case number.
Federal civil and criminal cases tied to Fairfax generally route through the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, often the Alexandria Division for Northern Virginia matters.
Bankruptcy is federal. Use the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and PACER, not Fairfax Circuit or General District Court search.
How to read Fairfax court-record fields carefully
A docket is a list of case activity. It does not always explain the legal meaning of each entry, and a single docket line should not be treated as a final outcome.
Plaintiff, defendant, petitioner, respondent, appellant, appellee, debtor, creditor, decedent, fiduciary, guardian and ward are roles. A party role does not automatically mean wrongdoing.
Complaint, warrant in debt, unlawful detainer, motion, order, hearing, arraignment, bond, continuance, judgment, satisfaction, dismissal and appeal should be read with surrounding entries.
Open, active, continued, dismissed, satisfied, appealed, convicted, acquitted or nolle prosequi can have different consequences by case type. Contact the court or an attorney if the legal effect matters.
Use Fairfax County court records responsibly
- Do not identify a person from a common name alone.
- Compare case number, court, filing year, party role, hearing date and docket activity.
- Do not assume a civil judgment shows current payment status.
- Do not assume an arrest, charge, warrant or hearing entry is a conviction.
- Do not harass, threaten, shame or retaliate against anyone.
- Do not republish children’s names, protected addresses, medical details or unnecessary sensitive information.
- Respect sealed, adoption, juvenile, family, protective order and confidential-record restrictions.
- Contact the official court for corrections, certified copies, sealing, expungement or access questions.
Frequently asked questions about Fairfax County court records

Can I search Fairfax County Circuit Court records by name?

How far back does Fairfax Circuit Court eCaseSearch go?
The eCaseSearch public page states that available case information begins October 18, 2004. Older records may require Circuit Court file review, the Offsite Records Center, the Historic Records Center, or another clerk route.
Does Fairfax eCaseSearch provide court documents?
No. Fairfax eCaseSearch provides public case information, but it states that case documents are not provided in eCaseSearch. Use the Circuit Court records, file review, copies, Land Records, CPAN, or Historic Records Center route depending on the document.
Where do I search Fairfax County General District Court cases?
Use Virginia’s General District Court Online Case Information System and select Fairfax County General District Court. The system can be searched by plaintiff or defendant name, case number, or hearing date.
Are Fairfax protective orders and commitment cases available in the General District Court online search?
No. The General District Court Online Case Information System states that protective orders, civil commitment proceedings, medical emergency custody orders and temporary detention orders are not available through that system.
Where are Fairfax juvenile, custody, support and domestic relations records handled?
They are handled through the Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court. Because juvenile, family, protective order and domestic relations matters can involve confidentiality limits, contact the JDR Clerk’s Office or Court Services Unit instead of assuming ordinary public online access.
How do I get certified copies of Fairfax County court records?
Request certified copies from the office that maintains the record. Fairfax Circuit Court land-record copies are listed at $0.50 per page plus $2.00 per certified document; Historic Records Center certified copies cost an additional $2.00 per document. Verify the current fee and payment method before ordering.
Where do I search Fairfax County land records, marriage licenses, judgments and wills?
Use Fairfax Circuit Court Land Records and the Court Public Access Network. CPAN is a subscriber-based service with records from 1742 to present and includes land records, judgment documents, fiduciary or probate documents, marriage licenses, notary records, charters and financing statements.
Where do I search Fairfax County appeals, federal cases and bankruptcy cases?
Use Virginia appellate case information for Court of Appeals of Virginia or Supreme Court of Virginia matters. Use PACER and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia for federal district cases, and use the Eastern District of Virginia Bankruptcy Court for bankruptcy cases.
