Kentucky Court Records Search by Name: CourtNet, Circuit Clerks, C-Track, Archives & PACER
A useful Kentucky court records search starts by identifying the court that handled the case. CourtNet can help locate public Kentucky case information, but official trial-court records and certified copies start with the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the case was handled. This guide explains name searches, case-number searches, court dates, copy requests, appellate records, older files, AOC criminal-record reports and federal PACER records.
Public-Court-Records.us is independent. This page is not the Kentucky Court of Justice, Administrative Office of the Courts, CourtNet, KYeCourts, C-Track, any Office of Circuit Court Clerk, Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives, PACER, a law firm, a government agency or a Consumer Reporting Agency.
Responsible-use warning: a name match does not prove identity. A complaint, petition, citation, arrest, criminal charge, indictment, warrant, docket entry or search result does not prove guilt or liability. Do not use this page for employment, tenant, credit, insurance or other FCRA-regulated screening decisions.
Kentucky court records start with the court clerk that handled the case
Kentucky’s official court-record instructions are clear: all requests for copies of court case records and information about reviewing court case records start with the clerk of the court that heard the case. For Circuit, Family, District and Business Court cases, that usually means the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the case was handled.
The Administrative Office of the Courts is important for court technology, criminal-record reports, CourtNet information and statewide administration, but it does not maintain ordinary court case files and cannot provide access to those case records.
Each county has an Office of Circuit Court Clerk for trial-court records.
Post-1978 files commonly start with the clerk and State Records Center route.
Kentucky Judicial Indexes cover selected older court materials from 1785 to 1991.
Kentucky federal appeals route through the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Kentucky court-record route finder
Select the record type you need. This privacy-safe helper runs only in your browser and does not ask for a name, date of birth, case number, Social Security number, driver license number, address or payment detail.
For circuit-level civil cases, felonies, divorces, adoptions, contested probate and title disputes, identify the county and case number, then contact that county’s Office of Circuit Court Clerk for copies or certified records.
How to search Kentucky court records by name or case number
Kentucky CourtNet is the state court system’s online database for public court case information from all 120 counties. Some access routes are subscription-based or role-based, while guest routes and court-event tools may be limited. Use CourtNet as a case-information locator, then verify the official court record with the clerk that holds the case file.
Decide whether the case is Circuit Court, Family Court, District Court, Business Court, Kentucky Court of Appeals, Supreme Court of Kentucky, an older archived case or a federal case.
A case number is usually the strongest identifier for locating a file, requesting copies and avoiding similar-name matches.
Try reasonable spelling variants, middle names, suffixes, maiden names, initials, business punctuation and LLC/Inc. variations. CourtNet-style searches may return exact and similar results.
Check county, court type, case number, party type, case title, filing date, scheduled events, charges if shown, disposition and whether the case is active or inactive.
For Circuit, Family, District and Business Court case records, call or visit the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the proceeding was handled.
If the case was heard by the Kentucky Court of Appeals or Supreme Court of Kentucky, use C-Track Public Access and the appropriate appellate clerk contact route.
AOC criminal-record reports, CourtNet case information and PACER federal records are different tools. Do not treat one as a complete substitute for the other.
Which Kentucky court-record route should you use?
Use this table before searching. It prevents the common mistake of sending every request to AOC or assuming one public search contains every case document.
| Record needed | Likely court or custodian | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Major civil case, felony, divorce, adoption, title dispute, injunction or contested probate | Circuit Court / county Office of Circuit Court Clerk | Use CourtNet or county court information to identify the case, then contact the county Circuit Court Clerk for copies or certified records. |
| Family case, custody, support, paternity, domestic violence or dependency matter | Family Court where available, otherwise Circuit or District Court route | Search public information carefully and expect privacy restrictions for child, adoption, dependency, domestic violence and termination-of-parental-rights materials. |
| Misdemeanor, traffic, city/county ordinance, violation or arraignment | District Court / county Office of Circuit Court Clerk | Use CourtNet or the citation/court-date route, then verify payment, disposition or copy needs with the Circuit Court Clerk. |
| Small claims or lower-dollar civil case | District Court | Search by case number or party name if available. A judgment entry may not prove whether the amount was paid, satisfied, appealed or vacated. |
| Probate of wills, mental health, juvenile or emergency protective matter | District Court or Family Court depending on issue and county | Contact the county Circuit Court Clerk because these categories can have restricted access or special review rules. |
| Business Court case | Business Court / Circuit Court Clerk route | Identify the county and case number, then request official case-file access through the appropriate Office of Circuit Court Clerk. |
| Kentucky Court of Appeals case | Kentucky Court of Appeals clerk / C-Track | Use C-Track Public Access or contact the Court of Appeals clerk at 502-573-7920 for appellate-record questions. |
| Supreme Court of Kentucky case | Supreme Court clerk / C-Track | Use C-Track Public Access or contact the Supreme Court clerk at 502-564-5444 for official appellate-record questions. |
| Stored or older Kentucky court file | County clerk, State Records Center or KDLA | Start with the county clerk. If the record is in a facility, the clerk should provide case and locator numbers for the next request. |
| Federal district, bankruptcy or federal appellate case | PACER / Eastern or Western District / federal bankruptcy court / Sixth Circuit | Use PACER or the specific federal court. Kentucky CourtNet and county clerks do not replace federal CM/ECF or PACER. |
How to request Kentucky court record copies
For trial court records, the county Office of Circuit Court Clerk is the starting point. The clerk can tell you whether the case file is available in the clerk’s office, stored at a records facility, restricted, destroyed under a retention schedule or routed to another official source.
- County where the case was handled.
- Case number, if known.
- Party names and business names.
- Approximate filing year or disposition year.
- Case type such as civil, criminal, family, probate, traffic or small claims.
- Exact document requested, such as judgment, order, decree, citation, docket sheet or disposition.
- Whether you need a plain copy or certified copy.
- Whether the record is in the clerk’s office.
- Whether the file is stored off-site or with a state records facility.
- Whether the record is sealed, confidential, restricted or unavailable.
- Current copy, certification, postage and payment requirements.
- Whether a case and file locator number is needed for State Records Center access.
- Whether the record may have been destroyed under retention schedules.
Use CourtNet, a court-date search, your citation, a notice, attorney paperwork or prior filings to identify the county and case number.
Use the Kentucky Court of Justice county dropdown or county court page to find the clerk office for the county where the case was handled.
Do not ask for “everything” unless necessary. Request the docket sheet, certified disposition, judgment, order, divorce decree, citation, video record, transcript information or specific filing.
Ask whether the receiving agency requires a certified copy and confirm current copy fees, certification fees, postage and payment methods.
If the clerk says the file is at the State Records Center, ask for the case and file locator numbers before contacting the State Records Center.
Copy request readiness checklist
Check each item before contacting the clerk. This does not send information anywhere.
Before requesting copies, identify the county, case number, document title, certification need and current fee/payment method.

Kentucky court records vs. AOC criminal record reports
A Kentucky AOC criminal record report is not the same thing as a certified court record. The report is based on state court activity, not federal court activity, and the report results state that they are not an official court record. The official court record is housed in the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the case was filed.
- Traffic “T” type cases.
- Misdemeanor “M” type cases.
- Felony charge “F” type cases.
- Circuit criminal “CR” type cases.
- County of origin, case number, original charge, amendments and disposition details when available.
- It is based on Kentucky state court activity, not federal records.
- Expunged or purged cases may not appear.
- Juvenile, mental-health and domestic-violence cases may be confidential or excluded.
- If another person’s record is found, AOC may notify that person and send them a copy of the report results.
- Read the difference between a report and an official court record.
- Choose FastCheck, One-Time Request, in-person or mail-service route only if a criminal-record report is what you need.
- Review payment methods and processing notes before ordering.
- Contact the AOC Records Unit at 800-928-6381 for report-result questions.
- Contact the county clerk if you need the official case file or certified court order.
Older Kentucky court records, State Records Center and KDLA
Older Kentucky court records require a careful sequence. Start with the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the case was handled. If the clerk says the file is stored at a records facility and available for public access, the clerk should identify the facility and provide case and file locator numbers. Those locator numbers matter because State Records Center court files cannot be searched by name or Social Security number.
- Ask whether the file is local, stored, archived or destroyed under retention rules.
- Ask for case number and file locator number if a records facility is involved.
- Ask whether the record is restricted before ordering copies.
- Use only after the clerk provides locator information.
- Email route: state.records@ky.gov.
- Phone route: 502-564-3617.
- Do not submit only a name or Social Security number.
- Use for many historical court, circuit, appellate and local records.
- Search Kentucky Judicial Indexes for selected historical cases from 1785 to 1991.
- Try alternate spellings and save accession notes.
Records that may be sealed, confidential, delayed or restricted
Not every Kentucky court record is publicly available online. Even when a case appears in a search result, some documents may be confidential, sealed, restricted, unavailable remotely, stored off-site or destroyed under approved retention schedules.
- Juvenile cases.
- Adoption and termination-of-parental-rights records.
- Mental-health proceedings.
- Domestic violence and protective-order materials.
- Dependency, neglect and abuse records.
- Sealed, expunged or confidential documents.
- Wrong county or court level.
- Wrong spelling, suffix, initials, maiden name or business name.
- Case filed under a different party role.
- Case too old for an ordinary online search.
- Stored file lacking clerk-provided locator numbers.
- Federal case mistakenly searched in state court tools.
Kentucky statewide court and archive contacts
For a local trial court record, do not start by mailing AOC or KDLA unless the official instructions tell you to. Start with the county Office of Circuit Court Clerk. These statewide contacts are useful for routing, background reports, appellate records, storage and archive questions.

Kentucky federal court records use PACER, not CourtNet
Federal district, bankruptcy and federal appellate records are separate from Kentucky state court records. Use PACER or the specific federal court’s CM/ECF route. Kentucky has Eastern and Western federal district and bankruptcy courts, and federal appeals go to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
- Confirm the case is federal, not Kentucky state court.
- Use PACER or CM/ECF for dockets and documents.
- Use court locations for Lexington, Ashland, Covington, Frankfort or London as needed.
- Contact the federal clerk for federal certified-copy questions.
- Confirm the case is federal and belongs in the Western District.
- Use PACER Case Locator if the district is unknown.
- Use court locations for Bowling Green, Louisville, Owensboro or Paducah as needed.
- Do not use CourtNet for federal case files.
- Use this route for Eastern District bankruptcy cases.
- Search bankruptcy dockets through PACER.
- Use VCIS only for limited automated bankruptcy case information when available.
- Contact the bankruptcy clerk for certified federal copies.
- Use this route for Western District bankruptcy cases.
- Search bankruptcy dockets through PACER.
- Do not search District Court for bankruptcy case files.
- Verify court-specific filing and copy instructions.

- Use PACER Case Locator or Sixth Circuit PACER links for dockets.
- Do not confuse federal appeals with Kentucky Court of Appeals cases.
- Contact the Sixth Circuit clerk for federal appellate copy questions.
- Register for PACER if you need federal record access.
- Use Case Locator if you do not know the federal court.
- Search a specific federal court when you know where the case was filed.
- Review PACER pricing before opening reports or documents.
PACER cost estimator
PACER pricing verified on September 1, 2026: official PACER pricing pages showed $0.10 per billable page, a $3 cap for many single documents, and a $30 quarterly fee-waiver threshold. PACER announced a temporary increase to $0.12 per page and a $40 quarterly waiver threshold effective January 1, 2027. Always verify current pricing before use.
What to do if a Kentucky court-record search returns no result
- Wrong county or court level.
- Name spelling, initials, suffix, maiden name or business punctuation.
- Searching for a party who is not publicly listed in the case.
- Using the AOC administrative-record route instead of the county clerk.
- Searching state court tools for a federal case.

- Older record stored off-site or requiring locator numbers.

- Case information delayed, modified or incomplete in an online system.
Use Kentucky court records carefully
- Several people or businesses may share the same name.
- A case filing is not proof that an allegation is true.
- A charge, citation, warrant or indictment is not a conviction.
- A judgment may not show whether it was paid, satisfied, appealed or vacated.
- Some online results can be delayed or incomplete.
- Do not harass, threaten or retaliate against a person listed in a case.
- Do not publish unnecessary personal information.
- Do not bypass sealed, expunged, juvenile or confidential-record restrictions.
- Do not use this page as a background-check or tenant-screening product.
- Do not treat AOC criminal record reports as certified court orders.
Frequently asked questions about Kentucky court records
How do I search Kentucky court records by name?
Start with official Kentucky Court of Justice resources such as CourtNet or the county Office of Circuit Court Clerk. Use a case number when possible. If searching by name, compare the county, case number, case type, party role, filing date, docket entries and disposition before relying on a match.
Is there one free Kentucky court-record search for every case?
No single public search should be treated as a complete replacement for every official case file. CourtNet provides Kentucky public case information, but official access to case records and copies starts with the clerk of the court that heard the case.
Who maintains Kentucky trial court case records?
For Circuit, Family, District and Business Court cases, the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the case was handled is the starting point for requesting copies or reviewing court case records.
Does the Kentucky Administrative Office of the Courts provide case-file copies?
No. The Kentucky Court of Justice says the Administrative Office of the Courts does not maintain court case records, is not the source of those records and cannot provide access to them. Contact the appropriate court clerk instead.
Where do I search Kentucky appellate court records?

Can the Kentucky State Records Center search stored court files by name?
No. Kentucky court-record instructions state that State Records Center case records cannot be searched by name or Social Security number. The court clerk must provide the case and file locator numbers before a State Records Center request can be submitted.
Where do I find older Kentucky court records?

No. Kentucky AOC criminal record report results state that they are not an official court record. The official court record is housed in the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in the county where the case was filed.
Where do I search Kentucky federal or bankruptcy court records?
