52-1 District Court handles district-level matters such as misdemeanors, civil infractions, traffic cases, qualifying civil lawsuits, landlord-tenant cases, small claims and the preliminary stages of felony prosecutions.

It does not replace Oakland County’s 6th Judicial Circuit Court for larger civil cases, divorce and other Circuit Court matters, or felony cases after bindover. Probate matters, state appeals and federal cases also use different court systems.

A blank MiCOURT result does not always mean no case exists

Michigan’s current MiCOURT terms explain several reasons a public search may not show a case. Some participating courts apply a seven-year criminal-sentence display filter, and several sensitive case categories are excluded from public MiCOURT entirely.

MiCOURT does not publicly display several protected case types
  • Adoption
  • Juvenile proceedings
  • Child protective proceedings
  • Juvenile guardianships
  • Mental illness matters
  • Name changes
  • Personal Protection Orders
  • Extreme Risk Protection Orders
  • Wills
  • Other specifically restricted categories
Other reasons for no result
  • You selected the wrong Oakland County District Court.
  • The name spelling differs.
  • The matter is actually in Circuit or Probate Court.
  • A felony was bound over to Circuit Court.
  • The conviction was lawfully set aside.
  • The record is older or not available through the public internet search.
  • The case is appellate or federal.
Correct next step: contact the court of record rather than assuming an online search proves that no record exists.
Michigan-specific issue

Why a felony record can move from Novi District Court to Oakland County Circuit Court

A felony can begin in 52-1 District Court for arraignment and preliminary proceedings. If the case is bound over, Oakland County’s 6th Judicial Circuit Court becomes the next court handling the felony prosecution.

Michigan Court Rule 8.119 contains an important public-access rule: for cases bound over to Circuit Court on or after July 2, 2024, the case and court records maintained by the District or Municipal Court become nonpublic immediately after entry of the bindover order. The Circuit Court record remains accessible according to applicable court-record rules.

1. District Court

Felony begins with lower-court proceedings.

2. Preliminary stage

The court determines whether the case proceeds toward Circuit Court.

3. Bindover

Qualifying public record access moves away from the District Court file.

4. Circuit Court

Search Oakland County’s Circuit Court records for the continuing felony case.

Practical troubleshooting: if you previously found a felony in Novi’s District Court search and later cannot find it there, check Oakland County Circuit Court before concluding that the case was dismissed or erased.
Civil records

Civil, landlord-tenant and small-claims records at 52-1

The Novi division handles District Court civil matters within Michigan’s jurisdictional limits, including landlord-tenant proceedings, land-contract forfeiture, garnishment-related proceedings and small claims. Oakland County states that all parties are required to e-file 52-1 Civil and Landlord-Tenant matters through MiFILE.

General Civil

District Court handles qualifying civil claims within the current District Court monetary limit. Larger matters generally belong in Circuit Court.

Small Claims

The current 52-1 Small Claims page states a maximum small-claims amount of $7,000. Search the case through MiCOURT and use the court page for current forms and procedures.

Landlord-Tenant

Use 52-1 for qualifying eviction and landlord-tenant records when the Novi division has jurisdiction. Filing and case lookup are separate tasks.

Judgment is not the same as payment status. If a civil docket shows a judgment, review later entries for a satisfaction, appeal, set-aside order, payment activity or other post-judgment action before describing the current status.
Traffic

Search Novi traffic tickets without confusing payment with the court record

Oakland County provides an online PayTickets service for participating 52nd District Court civil-infraction and misdemeanor matters. For 52-1 Novi, the service can be useful when the goal is to locate and pay an eligible ticket.

Use the official Oakland PayTickets page.

Choose 52-1 District Court and follow the on-screen search options.

Use the printed ticket or case information.

The service explains that qualifying searches can use a ticket/case number with last name or certain driver’s-license information.

Allow for ticket-processing delay.

Oakland County warns that a ticket may take up to seven days to appear online. Absence from the payment system does not cancel the due date.

Use MiCOURT when you need public case history.

Payment lookup and public case-history research serve different purposes.

Enter driver’s-license or other sensitive identifying information only on the official court/payment system. Public-Court-Records.us does not need or request that information.
Official copies

How to request a plain or certified Novi District Court record

MiCOURT provides informational public access; it does not turn the search screen into a certified court document. If a school, government agency, licensing authority, attorney or another recipient requires an official record, contact the court that maintains the case.

Find the correct case first.

Save the complete case number and confirm it belongs to 52-1 District Court.

Identify the exact document.

Examples can include an order, judgment, sentence, disposition, register of actions or another public filing.

Ask what the receiving institution requires.

A plain copy, certified copy, transcript and exemplified record are not necessarily interchangeable.

Contact 52-1 District Court.

Confirm current reproduction and certification charges, request method, accepted payment and whether mail or in-person service is required.

Do not send money based only on an unofficial guide.

Fees and procedures can change, and special provisions can apply to particular record types.

Michigan fee reference: Michigan law provides a general certified-copy baseline of $10 plus $1 per page for Circuit, District and Probate Court certified copies or exemplifications when no different legal provision applies. Confirm the actual 52-1 fee before ordering.

Docket reading

How to read a Novi court record without over-interpreting it

Complaint / charge

A filing or criminal charge states an allegation. It is not proof that the allegation is true.

Pending / active

The case still has unresolved activity. Do not report an outcome before checking later docket events.

Dismissed

A dismissal is not the same as a conviction. Read the actual order and later entries if available.

Judgment

A civil judgment does not automatically prove that money remains unpaid. Check for later satisfaction or post-judgment entries.

Bindover

In a felony case, this means the matter has moved from the preliminary District Court stage to Circuit Court.

Closed / disposed

This generally indicates the case is no longer pending in its prior procedural posture, but the docket should be reviewed for the actual disposition.

Federal records

Novi federal court records use PACER, not MiCOURT

Federal civil, criminal and bankruptcy records are separate from Michigan state-court systems. Oakland County falls within the Eastern District of Michigan for federal District Court matters. Bankruptcy cases use the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

How do I search Novi District Court records online?

Start with the official Michigan MiCOURT Case Search, accept the current terms, select Novi’s 52-1 District Court and search the public case information using the supported party-name or case-number fields.

Can I search Novi District Court records by name?

Yes, MiCOURT supports public participant-name searching for qualifying cases. A matching name does not prove identity, so verify the court, case number, filing date, party role and case type.

What cases does 52-1 District Court handle?

The court handles district-level civil matters within its jurisdiction, landlord-tenant proceedings, small claims, misdemeanors, civil infractions, traffic matters and preliminary stages of felony cases before any bindover to Circuit Court.

Why might a Novi felony case disappear from the District Court search?

For criminal cases bound over to Circuit Court on or after July 2, 2024, Michigan Court Rule 8.119 makes the District Court case and court records nonpublic after the bindover order. Search the corresponding Oakland County Circuit Court record instead.

No. MiCOURT excludes several protected case categories, some courts limit older criminal information shown online, and public internet case-history access does not mean every underlying court document is available online.
