Sedgwick County Court Records Search: Kansas Public Portal, Wichita Municipal Court & Copies

For most Sedgwick County court records, start with the Kansas District Court Public Access Portal. Sedgwick County is Kansas’ 18th Judicial District, and its District Court now operates on the statewide Kansas eCourt system.

The important exception is Wichita Municipal Court: Wichita city ordinance and municipal cases use a separate city court system rather than the statewide District Court portal.

The Sedgwick County District Court is part of the Kansas Judicial Branch—not Sedgwick County Government

This distinction matters when requesting records. Although the District Court and its Records Department operate from the Sedgwick County Courthouse in Wichita, the 18th Judicial District Court is part of the State of Kansas Judicial Branch. Sedgwick County Government therefore directs District Court record requests to the court itself.

The District Court handles civil, criminal, divorce and family matters, probate, estates, guardianships, juvenile matters, traffic, small claims and other state trial-court proceedings.

Do not send a District Court case request to Sedgwick County’s general KORA office. The 18th Judicial District must receive its own court-record requests.
Independent website notice: Public-Court-Records.us is not Sedgwick County District Court, the Kansas Judicial Branch, Wichita Municipal Court, PACER, KBI, a law firm or a Consumer Reporting Agency. A complaint, petition, charge, citation or lawsuit is not proof of guilt or liability.

Start with the court that actually handled the matter. The Kansas District Court portal is statewide, but it does not replace Wichita Municipal Court, Kansas appellate courts, federal courts or separate criminal-history databases.

Local system history

Sedgwick County changed court-record systems on August 7, 2023

This is one of the most important Sedgwick-specific details for older-record research. On August 7, 2023, the 18th Judicial District transitioned from its prior local system to the Kansas eCourt centralized case-management system.

The Kansas Judicial Branch explains that case information and court records are not the same thing. Case information can include the case number, parties, attorneys, judge and hearing dates. Court records are the documents actually filed in the case.

Older case information

Older Sedgwick cases may still be searchable by case information even when the original filed document images are not available remotely through the newer public portal.

Older document copies

If you need older filings, contact the Records Department. It specifically maintains microfiche, microfilm and electronic District Court records and can search archived cases not converted to the current system.

Practical rule: if a known older case appears in Smart Search but the document you need cannot be opened, do not assume the document was destroyed or is confidential. Ask the Records Department whether it exists in microfilm, microfiche, archived or other court storage.
Access limits

Public does not always mean remotely viewable

Kansas Supreme Court electronic-access rules make some public case information and records available through the browser-based portal while restricting sensitive material from remote access. A public record that is not available online may sometimes still be available through a courthouse public terminal.

Examples of records not ordinarily public
  • Adoption records.
  • Expunged criminal records.
  • Many child-in-need-of-care and juvenile records.
  • Grand jury proceedings.
  • Other sealed or legally confidential records.
Important distinction
  • Not online does not automatically mean sealed.
  • Not in Smart Search does not prove no case exists.
  • A courthouse terminal may provide broader public access to some records.
  • Sealed and nonpublic records remain unavailable to ordinary public users.

How to request Sedgwick County District Court records and certified copies

The Sedgwick County District Court Records Department requires court-record requests to be made in writing. The department states that it will provide an estimate and that amounts due must be paid before the request is filled.

Locate the case before requesting documents.

Save the exact case number, parties, approximate year and document name if the portal provides them.

Prepare one request per case number.

The Sedgwick Records Department specifically requires one records-request form for each separate case number.

Describe the exact record.

Request a particular petition, judgment, sentence, divorce decree, order, docket entry or other filing instead of asking staff to research an entire legal issue.

Submit the request.

Current options include email, mail, fax or in-person delivery to the 6th-floor Records Department.

Wait for the estimate.

The department determines applicable search, copy or archive costs based on the request and provides an estimate before fulfillment.

Pay before fulfillment.

Do not mail an assumed fee from an old article. Use the current quote supplied by the Records Department.

Wichita exception

Wichita Municipal Court records are separate from Sedgwick County District Court records

This is a major local distinction because Wichita contains much of Sedgwick County’s population. Wichita Municipal Court is a limited-jurisdiction city court that handles violations of the Wichita City Code. It has its own court-case and docket search tools.

Use Wichita Municipal Court for
  • City ordinance violations.
  • Wichita municipal traffic matters.
  • Municipal Court warrants and dockets.
  • City-level misdemeanor or ordinance matters within its jurisdiction.
Use Sedgwick County District Court for
  • State felony cases.
  • District Court civil lawsuits.
  • Family Law cases.
  • Probate, estates and guardianship.
  • District Court traffic and state-law cases.

Court dates

How to check an upcoming Sedgwick County District Court hearing

The 18th Judicial District publishes separate current calendars for Criminal/Traffic/Juvenile, Civil, Family Law and Probate. This can be useful after you have already located the case number.

  1. Open the official DC18 Court Schedule page.
  2. Select the correct case category.
  3. Open the current upcoming-docket document.
  4. Search for the case number or assigned judge.
  5. Recheck close to the hearing because schedules are subject to change.
Do not rely on an old search result for a court appearance. Confirm the current hearing information with the official court if missing a hearing could affect a legal right or obligation.
Court records vs criminal history

A Sedgwick court-record search is not a Kansas criminal-history report

The District Court portal searches individual court cases. Kansas also operates a separate Kansas Bureau of Investigation criminal-history service. The two systems have different purposes.

Appeals & federal

Sedgwick County appeals, federal court and bankruptcy records use separate systems

Kansas appeals

Use the Kansas Appellate Courts Public Access Portal for Kansas Court of Appeals and Supreme Court matters. Trial and appellate case numbers are separate records.

Federal District Court

Kansas has one federal District Court. Wichita is one of its court locations. Federal civil and criminal records use PACER rather than the Kansas District Court public portal.

Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy is federal. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Kansas has a Wichita location and uses PACER for electronic case records.

Docket help

How to read a Sedgwick County case result responsibly

Case information

Includes items such as the case number, case type, parties, attorneys, assigned judge and hearing dates. It is not necessarily the complete case file.

Events index

Shows filings, actions and events chronologically. A docket entry may summarize a filing but does not always provide the full document or legal meaning.

Court record

The actual document filed in the case. Online document availability can differ from case-information availability.

Complaint / petition

An allegation or request placed before the court. Filing it does not prove the allegations are true.

Charge

A criminal accusation. A filed charge is not the same as a conviction, acquittal, dismissal, plea or sentence.

Judgment / disposition

Review later entries for appeal, satisfaction, vacation, dismissal, modification or other post-judgment events before describing the current outcome.

Responsible use

Privacy, identity matching and legal-use cautions

  • A matching name does not prove identity.
  • An arrest or booking is not the same as a court conviction.
  • A criminal charge or indictment does not prove guilt.
  • A civil complaint or petition does not establish liability.
  • A judgment entry may not show whether the judgment was later paid, satisfied, modified, appealed or vacated.
  • Do not try to bypass sealed, expunged, adoption, juvenile or other confidential-record restrictions.
  • Do not republish unnecessary addresses, children’s information, medical information or other sensitive personal data.
  • Use the Clerk or court for certified copies, corrections and formal record questions.
