If you search Bexar County court records without first identifying the court, it is easy to land in the wrong database. Felony and civil district cases principally belong to the Bexar County District Clerk; county misdemeanors and probate matters involve the Bexar County Clerk; four Justice Courts maintain precinct-level cases; San Antonio Municipal Court has a separate city system; and federal cases use PACER.

Bexar County now directs public court-record users toward a consolidated Justice Information Portal hosted through Tyler Technologies’ Odyssey platform.

The old District Courts Inquiry states that civil case records stopped being available through that legacy interface on May 3, 2021.

Current system

Bexar County now promotes its Justice Information Portal as the consolidated search route.

Which search route should you use?

Felony criminal record

Use the Bexar County District Clerk and the Justice Information Portal. Review the filed case and its later disposition rather than treating a recent arrest result as the final outcome.

Misdemeanor record

Use the Bexar County Clerk misdemeanor-court route. County-level misdemeanor files are different from felony criminal district-court files.

Civil lawsuit

Determine whether the case belongs to District Court, County Court at Law or Justice Court. For a District Court civil case, the District Clerk is the principal custodian.

Divorce or family record

Start with the District Clerk’s court case search. If you ultimately need a certified divorce decree, identify the exact final decree and order certification from the official custodian.

Probate or guardianship

Use the Bexar County Clerk Probate Department and Justice Information Portal. New guardianship cases filed from October 1, 2025 follow the newer Bexar case-number format.

Justice Court record

Determine Justice of the Peace Precinct 1, 2, 3 or 4 before requesting a record or checking a court date.

San Antonio municipal citation

Use San Antonio Municipal Court’s own case system. A city citation should not automatically be searched as a District Clerk or County Clerk case.

Federal case

Bexar County is in the San Antonio Division of the Western District of Texas. Search federal cases through PACER.

How to search Bexar County court records by name

Bexar County publishes an official Justice Information Portal user guide. The steps below follow the actual Bexar Odyssey workflow.

  1. Open the Bexar Justice Information Portal.
  2. Select Smart Search.
  3. Click the “Enter a Record Number or Name” field.
  4. Enter a person’s name in Last, First Middle order.
  5. Remember that a name can represent a plaintiff, defendant, attorney, judge, business or another indexed party.
  6. If necessary, use the asterisk wildcard supported by the portal.
  7. Open Advanced Filtering Options when a common name produces too many results.
  8. Filter by location, case type, status, filing period or judicial officer only when useful.
  9. Submit the query and review the possible matches.
  10. Open the Case Number rather than stopping at the result row.
  11. Review the complete Case Summary.
  12. Scroll through Hearings and Events.
  13. Use Show More or Show All when a long case has additional docket entries.
  14. Verify court, case number, filing period, party role and disposition before attributing the case to a person.

Bexar’s documented wildcard rules

  • an asterisk is the documented wildcard;
  • at least one character is required in the first name when using wildcard searching;
  • at least three characters are required in the last name;
  • at least four characters are required when using a wildcard with a case number; and
  • names are not case-sensitive.
Do not assume Bexar uses every search feature available in other Odyssey counties. Use only the syntax and filters actually documented or visible in Bexar’s current portal.

The Bexar portal’s search results provide a starting point. Open the case number and review the Case Summary before deciding what the result means.

Bexar’s user guide explains that Hearings and Events are shown in reverse chronological order, with newer events first. Long cases can require Show More or Show All.

Searching within a long Case Summary

The Bexar Odyssey guide recommends using the browser’s Find tool for long case summaries. Depending on the case, useful search terms may include:

  • judgment;
  • dismiss;
  • sentence;
  • plea;
  • order;
  • hearing; and
  • motion.
Do not interpret one word without context. A dismissal may apply to one charge, party, claim or motion instead of ending the entire case.

The Bexar County District Clerk is the official custodian for Bexar County civil district-court and felony criminal district-court records.

Bexar County misdemeanor records
